Introduction
In this lesson, we will learn how to talk about professions in Arabic. We will also expand our vocabulary related to work and employment.
What is Your Profession?
To ask someone what their profession is, you can say:
ما مهنتك؟
(pronounced: maa mihnatak?)
To answer, you can use the following structure:
أنا (profession)
(pronounced: ana [profession])
For example, if you are a doctor, you would say:
أنا طبيب
(pronounced: ana tabīb)
Basic Vocabulary
Here are some common professions in Arabic:
طبيب (tabīb) - doctor
مهندس (muhandis) - engineer
محاسب (muḥāsib) - accountant
مدرس (mudarris) - teacher
محامي (muḥāmī) - lawyer
شرطي (shurṭī) - police officer
ممرض (mumarriḍ) - nurse
بائع (bāyiʿ) - salesman
طالب (ṭālib) - student
عامل (ʿāmil) - worker
To talk about someone's profession, you can use the following structure:
هو/هي (profession)
(pronounced: huwa/hiya [profession])
For example, if you are talking about a male doctor, you would say:
هو طبيب
(pronounced: huwa tabīb)
If you are talking about a female doctor, you would say:
هي طبيبة
(pronounced: hiya ṭabība)
Where Do You Work?
To ask someone where they work, you can say:
أين تعمل؟
(pronounced: ayna taʿmal?)
To answer, you can use the following structure:
أعمل في (place of work)
(pronounced: aʿmal fī [place of work])
For example, if you work in a hospital, you would say:
أعمل في المستشفى
(pronounced: aʿmal fī al-mustashfā)
