Objectives:
Students will be able to understand the concept of time difference.
Students will be able to use the correct tense to talk about events in the past, present, and future.
Students will be able to use time zone maps to determine the time difference between two locations.
Materials:
Whiteboard or chart paper
Markers
Time zone map
Index cards
Procedure:1. Introduction (5 minutes)
* Begin by asking students if they have ever experienced jet lag. If so, have them share their experiences.
* Explain that jet lag is caused by the body's natural circadian rhythm being disrupted when traveling across time zones.
* Define the term "time difference" and explain that it refers to the difference in time between two locations.
2. Time Zone Maps (10 minutes)
* Display a time zone map and explain how to use it to determine the time difference between two locations.
* Have students work in pairs to practice using the map to find the time difference between different cities.
3. Past, Present, and Future Tenses (15 minutes)
* Review the past, present, and future tenses.
* Explain that when talking about events that happened in the past, we use the past tense. For events that are happening now, we use the present tense. And for events that will happen in the future, we use the future tense.
* Provide students with examples of each tense.
4. Time Difference Activity (20 minutes)
* Divide students into pairs.
* Give each pair of students an index card with a different scenario written on it.
* The scenarios should involve two people in different time zones talking to each other about an event that happened in the past, is happening now, or will happen in the future.
* Have students practice the conversation using the correct tense.
5. Practice (15 minutes)
* Have students practice using the past, present, and future tenses to talk about events in different time zones.
* Provide them with a variety of scenarios to practice with.
6. Assessment (5 minutes)
* Have students complete a short quiz to assess their understanding of time difference and the correct use of tenses.
Differentiation:
For struggling students, provide them with more support during the activities. For example, you could give them a list of the tenses to use in each scenario.
For advanced students, challenge them to use more complex tenses, such as the past perfect or future perfect.
Extension:
Have students research the history of time zones and how they have changed over time.
Have students create a presentation about a specific time zone and how it affects the lives of people who live there.
