Japanese Vowels and Long Sounds91
Unlike English, Japanese has only five vowel sounds: a, i, u, e, and o. However, Japanese does have long vowels, which are indicated by a macron (ー) over the vowel. Long vowels are pronounced for twice as long as short vowels.
There are two ways to create a long vowel in Japanese: by doubling the vowel or by using a long vowel marker.
Doubling the Vowel
The most common way to create a long vowel is by doubling the vowel. This is done by writing the vowel twice in a row. For example, the word "a" (ah) becomes "aa" (aah) when the vowel is doubled.
Here are some examples of words with doubled vowels:
a (ah) - aa (aah)
i (ee) - ii (eee)
u (oo) - uu (ooo)
e (eh) - ee (eeh)
o (oh) - oo (ooh)
Using a Long Vowel Marker
The other way to create a long vowel is by using a long vowel marker. The long vowel marker is a small line that is placed over the vowel. For example, the word "a" (ah) becomes "ā" (aah) when the long vowel marker is used.
Here are some examples of words with long vowel markers:
a (ah) - ā (aah)
i (ee) - ī (eee)
u (oo) - ū (ooo)
e (eh) - ē (eeh)
o (oh) - ō (ooh)
Rules for Using the Long Vowel Marker
There are a few rules that you need to follow when using the long vowel marker:
The long vowel marker can only be used with the vowels a, i, u, e, and o.
The long vowel marker must be placed directly over the vowel.
The long vowel marker cannot be used with doubled vowels.
Long Vowels in Speech
When speaking Japanese, it is important to pronounce long vowels correctly. Long vowels are pronounced for twice as long as short vowels. If you do not pronounce long vowels correctly, it can make it difficult for people to understand what you are saying.
Here are some tips for pronouncing long vowels correctly:
Hold your breath for twice as long when you pronounce a long vowel.
Over-exaggerate the long vowel sound when you are first learning to speak Japanese.
Use a mirror to check your pronunciation. You should see your mouth open wider and your lips rounder when you pronounce a long vowel.
With practice, you will be able to pronounce long vowels correctly and speak Japanese fluently.
